Dombo has a nice kick out.  Legs and Floyd both are unable to secure blocks and GMP.  Dielman gets to the LB but has his legs taken out by Floyd after M80 misses the Will.  We are using Outside Zone on this play, so a great chance to learn about that.  The two combos are Dielman and Hardwick, Vasquez and Clary.  The covered men (Dielman and Vasquez) execute a “rip and reach” to open up and turn the man covering them.  After ripping, the reach the second level to block the LB.  The uncovered men (Hardwick and Clary) execute a “pull/overtake”.  They take a small pull step, get on their partner’s hip, and overtake the turned man.  Vasquez and Clary demonstrate this wonderfully in this instance.

Dombo goes all Frankenstein (arms too straight) and misses.  Wilson and Gates do well.  Dielman and Hardwick do a great job, and get the DT washed past the hole.  Good cut off from Vasquez and a sweet hold from Clary.

22 Zone Read

LT- 2               LG- 2               C- 2                 RG- 2              RT- 2

You may wonder why this is 22 if the play goes left.  The blocking scheme is right.  Naanee’s read fake is able to freeze two defenders.  Domb comes down and seals the LB inside.  The rest of the line zones up and this creates a nice cutback seam off of Domb and Dielman.

Dielman has a tough block here.  Hardwick misses the LB on first pass, but gets him on second try.  Right side looks well.  This play could actually be a Zone Lead, but the difference is negligible.  In our Iso looks, we normally run a zone backside and fan (man) the play side.  It appears we may be zoning play side as well here.  Ostensibly, they are the same play so I will continue to identify as Iso for simplicity.

How can we have all twos if there was a sack?  Because the mistake is almost certainly pre-snap.  Technically, all linemen secure their blocks.  So what happened?  Suspect #1 is Hardwick, who may have missed the proper protection call and slid it right instead of left.  Suspect #2 is Rivers.  He may have also made the wrong protection call (I don’t know who makes the calls).  In addition, regardless of protection it is the QB’s responsibility to pick up the weak side blitzer.  How?  By throwing to the blitzer’s vacated zone.  This leads to Suspect #3, Floyd.  I don’t know what route he runs, but he should have read the blitz and settled “in space”.  Snafu all around regardless.

Elegant play here.  If TDEK can read Dielman a little better, and be a little more patient, he could have gotten the safety one on one in space.  The F makes a nice block.  Domb hinges and Hardwick gets a pancake.  Vasquez and Clary double the Tackle to the backside LB.  However, since the End stunts, they get him too!  That’s three for two if you’re counting.  The Y just piles on.  Dielman pulls and seals the Mike nicely.

We leave the backside ILB unblocked by design and GMP.  The Y and H do well here.  Hardwick actually is blocking TWO guys for a few steps.  The idea is the unblocked LB will get caught in the wash, but that doesn’t happen here.  The only real alternative is to use Vasquez and Clary and have them double the DT to the Will.  Then Hardwick would handle the backside DT and Clary would scoop the backside DE.   This, though, leaves the backside OLB unblocked and he can scream down and blow the play up.  Pros and cons to both approaches.

NEW PLAY: A very nice play.  A “T” block is the same as a “G” block, just with the tackle instead of the guard.  The Tackle (Dombo in this case) pulls behind the H and kicks out contain.  This action allows a good angle from Dielman to the four that was over Domb.  Dielman nails him which creates the hole for the F and RB to shoot through.  Watch Hardwick, though.  He not only is able to get across the face of the DT who’s shaded play side, but he blocks the LB nicely as well.  The F loads on the Sam, Clary reaches the three, the Y reaches the five, the Wing reaches the six and we leave the Will and back side contain unblocked.
